Challenge:
The Government of Niger sought to secure U.S. approval for a crucial aquifer project while strengthening its strategic alliance with the United States. This effort was timed to align with the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, presenting a unique opportunity to highlight Niger’s role as a reliable, democratic ally and its strategic importance in global security, particularly in the fight against Islamic terrorism. However, Niger faced significant challenges in effectively communicating its value to U.S. policymakers, the Biden Administration, and the American public through major tier-1 outlets.
Action:
Red Banyan created talking points tailored for media interviews to convey Niger’s value as an ally, as well as the significance of the development project for the improvement of Niger’s economy and geopolitical stability in the region. Our team implemented a media outreach campaign to position Niger positively in the global media. This involved identifying key outlets and journalists focusing on Africa and the Sahel region, conducting targeted outreach, and securing high-impact media opportunities. We also developed and distributed press releases that clearly communicated Niger’s strategic value and secured interviews for key Nigerien officials.
Impact:
Red Banyan’s strategic approach enabled the Government of Niger to effectively communicate its value as a key U.S. ally in the Sahel region. The media outreach campaign resulted in high-profile media coverage, positioning Niger favorably in the context of U.S.-Africa relations. Unfortunately, our successful partnership with Niger was interrupted by a sudden coup d’état, in which the country’s presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum, and Presidential Guard commander General Abdourahamane Tchiani proclaimed himself the leader of a new military junta.
