The Oneida Indian Nation’s Change the Mascot campaign urging Washington’s NFL team to change its name held a remarkably successful symposium today in the nation’s capital.
Members of the press packed the standing-room only ballroom at the Ritz-Carlton Georgetown where U.S. lawmakers, Native American leaders, a noted psychologist, and student activists spoke out against the offensive team mascot.
Nearly 100 members of the press were among those gathered, including journalists from top-tier publications including CNN, NPR, TIME, Associated Press, USA Today and The Washington Post.
The event comes on the heels of President Obama’s comments about the Washington NFL team’s continued use of a racial slur as its name.
